R.MANGLE FOR D.MIRANDA (2024)
Lennar Center
Coral Gables FL
3’ dia. x 7’-4”
bronze
This memorial to Dario Miranda is located at the Lennar Medical Center, where he received care. His widow Lydia approached the University of Miami School of Architecture—where Miranda previously taught classes about wind and architectural structure—to commission a water feature for her husband, whose contemplative and excitable love for nature she wished to honor. His particular interest in the flora and fauna of South Florida led to discussions of mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) and Everglade limestone (Schizoporella floridana), and their relationship to water.
The water feature is made of a combination of machined and cast bronze elements. A network of machined straight or simply curved bronze tubes, two of which house water feeds, connect to one another with small continuous custom nodes, creating a delicate braced frame that supports six cast spouts. These spouts are fabricated using 3d-printed foam positives for loss casting that allow for a suppleness and variability in form. The spouts were designed with material efficiency in mind, such that the bronze is deployed only where and in the quantities necessary to produce self-support, resulting in an intricate fiber of structure. Streams of water trickle from spout to spout and make their way to the formed bronze base before draining into the basin below.
